What you can expect in a typical day:

Instrumentation Design Engineer provides technical design with focus on safety, schedule, and cost management adherence, while complying with good engineering practices, company policies and all applicable regulations and codes of practice.

Key Responsibilities:

Instrumentation Design Engineer Responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Generating detailed scope of work packages for E/I and automation contractor for tender / procurement process applying value engineering where possible.
  • Identify and evaluate Instrumentation/Automation installations, integrity and efficiency improvements.
  • Define Instrumentation requirements for capital projects and interact with internal & external stakeholders, vendors and contractors for tender negotiation, cost estimates, constructability and safety reviews.
  • Input into Project Management regarding Instrumentation projects including cost estimates, planning and schedule reporting.
  • Generation of Instrumentation Input / Output Lists, instrument index, cable block diagrams and Loop drawings (AutoCAD), IS calculations, and all other relevant Instrumentation design documents. • Knowledge of ATEX compliance within design.
  • Responsible for Instrumentation handover documentation.
  • Control system panel design, safety system interlocks, emergency shutdown systems, gas detection / fire alarm interfaces and FAT/SAT (Instrumentation Input / Output Lists) where required.
  • Writing commissioning / test documentation / Loop Test packs. • Responsible for the development of site Instrumentation / Safety systems related testing procedures as required by the project.
  • Assist with the Co-ordination of the E & I contractors during construction and commissioning activities where applicable.
  • Reviewing system vendor / automation documentation.
  • Manage Instrumentation projects throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Actively support the installation and functionality testing of Instrumentation / Automation equipment where required.
  • Work with Operations, Engineering and Maintenance departments to troubleshoot issues. • Ability to manage workload of multiple projects of varying complexity. • Provide training to the maintenance technicians and others, as required.
  • Provide Instrumentation support to others within the projects group to ensure that site standards are maintained.

Education and Experience:

  • Degree qualified in Applied Physics and Instrumentation, Instrumentation Engineering or equivalent
  • ATEX (CompEx) qualified 1 – 4
  • 3-5 years’ industry experience
  • Broad range of experience with instrumentation, control and safety systems, high/medium/low voltage equipment and motor control.
  • Knowledge of HAC (Hazardous Area Classification) drawings and EPD(Explosion Protection Documentation) in relation to equipment specification.
