Company Overview

The Medieval Mile Museum (DAC)is a cultural and heritage attraction located in the heart of Kilkenny’s historic city. Located in the restored St Mary’s Church, the museum forms a central part of Kilkenny’s Medieval Mile — a unique stretch of history that showcases the city’s rich medieval past.

The Medieval Mile Museum will continue to operate as normal throughout 2026, while an exciting period of development takes place in preparation for its evolution into the Museum of Medieval Kilkenny in 2027.

The Museum of Medieval Kilkenny is a new visitor experience brand that brings together three historically significant elements:

  • The Tholsel Building
  • St Mary’s Church and Graveyard (The Medieval Mile Museum)
  • The outdoor spaces connecting and surrounding these sites

By combining these locations into one compelling, integrated visitor offer, the Museum of Medieval Kilkenny aims to elevate the cultural experience available within the city. This new brand and enhanced visitor journey are designed to appeal to the growing cultural tourism market, positioning Kilkenny as a must-visit destination for heritage and storytelling.

Role Overview

The Medieval Mile Museum, located at the heart of Kilkenny’s historic city, is seeking a passionate and knowledgeable Museum Assistant Manager to support the Chief Operations Manager in overseeing the daily operations of this visitor attraction.

The ideal candidate will hold a qualification in History, Archaeology, or Heritage Studies, and will have proven experience in museum or heritage work. This role combines collections care, education, events, and operational management — offering the opportunity to play a key role in preserving Kilkenny’s story while engaging diverse audiences through dynamic programmes and experiences.

  • Ensure the museum operates to the highest standards of visitor care, presentation, and safety.
  • Support reporting, budgeting, and compliance requirements as needed.
  • Act as deputy in the absence of the COM.

  • Oversee the care, documentation, and presentation of the museum’s artefacts in line with National Museum of Ireland standards.
  • Support exhibition planning, research, and interpretive content development.
  • Maintain detailed records relating to the museum’s collection, loans, and condition reports.
  • Assist with conservation and storage practices to ensure long-term preservation of artefacts.

Education & Community Engagement

  • Develop and deliver educational programmes and workshops for schools, families, and community groups.
  • Build strong links with local educational institutions, cultural partners, and community organisations.
  • Create engaging interpretation and learning materials that bring Kilkenny’s medieval story to life.

Events & Tourism Development

  • Support the creation and delivery of events, talks, and cultural activities within the museum.
  • Contribute to the development of innovative public programmes that enhance visitor experience and attract new audiences.
  • Work collaboratively with the wider team to promote the museum as a key tourism destination within Kilkenny’s Medieval Mile and Ireland’s Ancient East.

Person SpecificationEssential Qualifications & Experience:

  • Qualification in History, Archaeology, Heritage Studies, or a related discipline.
  • Experience in a museum, heritage, or cultural tourism environment.
  • Knowledge of artefact handling, documentation, and care in line with National Museum of Ireland standards.
