Job Summary
We are seeking a motivated and technically skilled Mechanical Building Services Design Engineer with four years of post-qualification experience to join our expanding engineering team in Limerick. In this mid-level role, you will take ownership of mechanical design packages and support project delivery across commercial, industrial, pharmaceutical, or data centre developments. Reporting to the MEP Director, the Building Services Mechanical Design Engineer will be a key member of the MEP Team. He/she will have notable Mechanical and Building Services experience in addition to the ability to communicate and engage with stakeholders, at all levels as required.
Key Responsibilities
- Engineering Design: Develop comprehensive mechanical building services designs, including HVAC, heating, chilled water, ventilation, domestic water, drainage, and renewable energy integrations.
- Calculations & Specification: Prepare detailed engineering calculations (e.g., thermal load calculations, pipe sizing, ductwork pressure drops) and author technical specifications and reports.
- BIM & CAD Coordination: Utilize Autodesk Revit and AutoCAD to produce, modify, and review coordinated 2D/3D layout drawings and schematic diagrams.
- Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Work closely with internal electrical engineering teams, structural engineers, architects, and external site contractors to resolve spatial and systemic conflicts.
- Technical Quality Assurance: Respond to Requests for Information (RFIs) from site personnel and systematically review technical submittals, vendor packages, and materials.
- Tendering Support: Assist project managers in preparing tender documentation, quantity take-offs, and design risk assessments.
- Site Inspections & Surveys: Attend design and site coordination meetings; perform site inspections to verify that installations accurately match design intent and drawings.
- Commissioning Support: Assist senior engineers and testing teams through pre-commissioning, Test & Balancing (TAB), and ultimate client handover phases.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Education: Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree (NFQ Level 8) in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
- Professional Experience: Minimum 4 years of proven post-graduate experience within a building services consultancy or mechanical M&E contracting environment.
- Software Proficiency: Direct hands-on experience using Autodesk Revit, AutoCAD, and industry-standard thermal modeling/load calculation software (e.g., IES Virtual Environment or Hevacomp).
- Professional Accreditation: Active membership with Engineers Ireland, with clear evidence of tracking toward or holding Chartered Engineer status.
- Technical Knowledge: Deep understanding of mechanical system components (HVAC, piping, controls) and practical application of Irish Building Regulations and European standards.
- Communication & Collaboration: Strong analytical problem-solving abilities, excellent technical report-writing skills, and a confident communication style tailored for team and client-facing discussions.
- Mobility: A valid, clean Irish or EU driving licence to facilitate site visits.
