Job Summary

We are seeking a motivated and technically skilled Mechanical Building Services Design Engineer with four years of post-qualification experience to join our expanding engineering team in Limerick. In this mid-level role, you will take ownership of mechanical design packages and support project delivery across commercial, industrial, pharmaceutical, or data centre developments. The position balances desk-based engineering design with active site coordination, providing an excellent opportunity for a professional looking to transition into project management and senior engineering responsibilities.

Job Objectives

•             Short Term - Fulfil the role of Building Services Mechanical Design Engineer

Key Responsibilities

  • Engineering Design: Develop comprehensive mechanical building services designs, including HVAC, heating, chilled water, ventilation, domestic water, drainage, and renewable energy integrations.
  • Calculations & Specification: Prepare detailed engineering calculations (e.g., thermal load calculations, pipe sizing, ductwork pressure drops) and author technical specifications and reports.
  • BIM & CAD Coordination: Utilize Autodesk Revit and AutoCAD to produce, modify, and review coordinated 2D/3D layout drawings and schematic diagrams.
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Work closely with internal electrical engineering teams, structural engineers, architects, and external site contractors to resolve spatial and systemic conflicts.
  • Technical Quality Assurance: Respond to Requests for Information (RFIs) from site personnel and systematically review technical submittals, vendor packages, and materials.
  • Tendering Support: Assist project managers in preparing tender documentation, quantity take-offs, and design risk assessments.
  • Site Inspections & Surveys: Attend design and site coordination meetings; perform site inspections to verify that installations accurately match design intent and drawings.
  • Commissioning Support: Assist senior engineers and testing teams through pre-commissioning, Test & Balancing (TAB), and ultimate client handover phases.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Education: Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree (NFQ Level 8) in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • Professional Experience: Minimum 4 years of proven post-graduate experience within a building services consultancy or mechanical M&E contracting environment.
  • Software Proficiency: Direct hands-on experience using Autodesk Revit, AutoCAD, and industry-standard thermal modeling/load calculation software (e.g., IES Virtual Environment or Hevacomp).
  • Professional Accreditation: Active membership with Engineers Ireland, with clear evidence of tracking toward or holding Chartered Engineer status.
  • Technical Knowledge: Deep understanding of mechanical system components (HVAC, piping, controls) and practical application of Irish Building Regulations and European standards.
  • Communication & Collaboration: Strong analytical problem-solving abilities, excellent technical report-writing skills, and a confident communication style tailored for team and client-facing discussions.
  • Mobility: A valid, clean Irish or EU driving licence to facilitate site visits.
