About the Salt Medical
As a global CDMO and end-to-end partner, SALT Medical supports the full medical device lifecycle, from development through to manufacturing and supply. Our expert team, ISO cleanroom facilities, and international network enable high-quality, cost-effective production, as well as precision component sourcing with fast and reliable lead times for global MedTech companies. Our European headquarters in Galway, Ireland, is expanding its team to support growing global business needs.
Role Overview
The Director of Sales at Salt Medical plays a pivotal role in leading strategic account growth and driving complex technical sales within the medical device sector. This position focuses on developing long-term partnerships with major OEM customers, managing design-in opportunities, and ensuring that customer requirements are translated effectively into commercially and technically viable solutions. The ideal candidate will combine deep product, regulatory, and market knowledge with strong cross-functional leadership, working closely with R&D, Quality, Operations, and Supply Chain teams to align sales execution with strategic business goals.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage a portfolio of 3–5 strategic key accounts, prioritising top-tier OEMs, such as Medtronic, Johnson & Johnson, and Boston Scientific, while actively cultivating relationships with other high-potential market players.
- Achieve annual sales growth and revenue targets as defined in the business plan.
- Accurately forecast quarterly and annual revenue based on a defined sales pipeline, maintaining forecast accuracy within ±15%.
- Lead and successfully complete a minimum of 2–3 major supplier qualification audits with key customers each year.
- Drive the technical sales process to secure design-in status for at least 1–2 major new customer programmes annually.
- Strategic Account Leadership: Develop and execute long-term, multi-year account strategies that transition customer relationships from transactional supplier arrangements to valued technical partnerships. Develop a deep understanding of each customer’s business, R&D roadmap, and competitive landscape.
- Technical Solution Selling: Act as a critical bridge between customer engineering teams and internal R&D. Articulate complex technical value propositions and translate customer needs into actionable product and process specifications.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration and Influence: Lead without direct authority, coordinating effectively with internal R&D, Quality, Operations, and Supply Chain teams to resolve critical issues, ensure on-time delivery, and align resources with strategic account objectives.
- Compliance and Quality Stewardship: Serve as a frontline guardian of the company’s quality and regulatory standards. Ensure that all proposals, communications, and agreements fully comply with relevant regulations and standards, such as FDA QSR and ISO 13485.
- Industry Insight and Consultative Approach: Maintain a deep understanding of downstream medical device trends. Proactively advise customers on new materials, technologies, and processes that may enhance product performance or accelerate time to market.
Skills and Experience
- Degree or relevant background in biomedical engineering, polymer materials, mechanical automation, biology, or a related STEM field, with the ability to interpret technical drawings and standards, such as ISO and ASTM.
- Deep Product and Regulatory Knowledge: Strong knowledge of the underlying material science, manufacturing processes, biocompatibility, sterilisation compatibility, and regulatory requirements applicable to the products, such as FDA 21 CFR Part 820 and ISO 13485.
- Complex Sales Competency: Demonstrated ability to engage in professional dialogue with multiple customer-side departments, including R&D, Purchasing, Quality, and Production.
- Proven Key Account and Project Management: Direct experience managing complex, long-cycle sales projects, from design-in through to validation, with major medical device OEMs such as Medtronic, Johnson & Johnson, or Boston Scientific.
- Technical Bridge and Compliance: Strong ability to translate technical product and process details and lead rigorous supplier qualification audits, ensuring adherence to quality and regulatory standards, including ISO 13485.
- Strategic Customer Integration: Demonstrated success in engaging with customer R&D teams early in the design phase to become a strategic design-in partner and provide valued technical input.
