About the role

Drug Delivery Scientist

About Your New Employer

  • Join an innovative pharmaceutical and medical technology development environment focused on advancing next-generation blood-contacting drug delivery systems.
  • Work as part of a collaborative, cross-site project team involving specialists in polymer science, formulation development, process development, and product characterisation.
  • Contribute to the development of products with future preclinical and clinical applications, from early-stage material development through to technology transfer.
  • This is an onsite opportunity based in Galway, offering the chance to work in a technically focused and multidisciplinary research environment.
  • This is an 18 month contract role.

About Your New Job

As the Drug Delivery Specialist, you will support and lead development activities for innovative drug delivery systems, reporting directly to the Research Team Lead.

  • Conduct polymer synthesis activities and adapt established procedures to identify and define critical quality attributes (CQAs).
  • Develop and optimise formulations and processes for drug delivery systems, including polymer, hydrogel, and particle-based technologies.
  • Manage material preparation, formulation, particle and hydrogel manufacturing, and post-processing activities.
  • Apply your materials science expertise to develop drug-loaded carrier systems and support product characterisation.
  • Oversee critical process steps and product formation activities to ensure robust and reproducible development outcomes.
  • Troubleshoot formulation and process challenges, implementing improvements in collaboration with the wider technical team.
  • Document, review, and track development activities in line with internal procedures and regulatory expectations.
  • Support internal and external technology transfer activities, including travel where required.
  • Contribute to development work that supports future preclinical, clinical, and regulatory requirements.

What Skills You Need

  • Hands-on experience in pharmaceutical development, particularly in drug delivery, hydrogel, particle-based, or related formulation systems.
  • A strong materials science background, with expertise in biomaterials formulation and characterisation. A PhD in a relevant discipline is preferred.
  • Proven understanding of formulation and process development, including the optimisation of critical quality attributes (CQAs) and critical process parameters (CPPs).
  • Practical experience with polymers, hydrogels, drug-loaded carrier systems, or related biomaterials.
  • Ability to work independently, manage development activities, and deliver results in a fast-paced research and development environment.
  • Strong technical documentation, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of GMP or GMP-equivalent standards and pharmaceutical regulatory requirements is advantageous.
  • Experience working within cross-functional or multidisciplinary teams is desirable.
  • Previous experience with intellectual property filings or invention disclosures would be a distinct advantage.

What's on Offer

  • The opportunity to work on the development of innovative blood-contacting drug delivery technologies with potential preclinical and clinical applications.
  • A technically challenging role offering hands-on involvement across polymer synthesis, formulation development, process development, and product characterisation.
  • Collaboration with experienced multidisciplinary and cross-site teams, with exposure to technology transfer and advanced product development activities.
  • Onsite position based in Galway.
