Project Scientist — EcologyLocation: Galway; Dublin; Cork; Kilkenny; Sligo Join Us in Shaping the Future of ecological assessment, nature-based solutions and sustainable infrastructure delivery We are looking for an experienced Project Scientist (Ecology) to join one of Ireland’s leading ecology teams. You will contribute to high-value technical advisory services across EIA, Appropriate Assessment (AA), SEA, and nature-based solution projects for clients in transport, water, energy and the built and natural environment. This role offers hands-on field survey work, data analysis and report writing, and the opportunity to shape biodiversity-focused assessments and regenerative designs on technically challenging national projects. Purpose & Scope Of The Role The role supports delivery of ecological impact assessment (EcIA), ecological surveys, Environmental Impact Assessment (biodiversity chapters) and Appropriate Assessment (AA), with responsibilities that include undertaking ecological field surveys (habitat classification, protected species and invasive species surveys), analysing and interpreting survey data, preparing high-quality technical reports and contributing to nature‑based and restorative design solutions; you will work under the supervision of a lead ecologist, support multi-disciplinary project teams, liaise with clients and stakeholders, and be based in the Environment, Planning and Renewables division reporting to a Principal Scientist (TBC). As part of an Ecology Team, you will contribute to projects from early-stage development through consenting and policy inputs (SEA) on schemes that range from local to national scale and that will require regular fieldwork, GIS mapping, report production and client liaison. Your Impact In This Position By joining the team you will deliver robust EcIA and AA inputs that inform consenting decisions and mitigation design, produce technically sound and compliant reports and survey outputs that influence project design and biodiversity outcomes, support the delivery of nature-based solutions and regenerative approaches that enhance biodiversity and sustainable outcomes across client projects, and help maintain the team’s reputation for delivering complex and challenging projects across Ireland. Core CapabilitiesTechnical Expertise & Knowledge Demonstrated field survey experience in ecology, including habitat classification (e.g. Fossitt), and surveys for badger, otter, bat, bird and invasive species. Familiarity with Irish and European legislation (Habitats Directive, Birds Directive, EIA Directive) and transposing Irish regulations. Knowledge of EIA/EcIA processes, Appropriate Assessment (Article 6 of the Habitats Directive) and Water Framework Directive assessments. Ability to record, process and critically analyse ecological data and use GIS/mapping tools. Reporting, Documentation & Compliance Ensure accurate, clear and timely documentation and reporting, adhering to internal standards, regulatory requirements and the organisation’s safety management system. Produce technical and safety documentation to a high standard, ensuring data accuracy, traceability and compliance with internal/external standards. Maintain registers, logs and document control processes and follow sector-specific statutory frameworks. Fieldwork Delivery & Survey Logistics Plan and undertake field surveys safely and efficiently, including logistics, equipment management and adherence to survey protocols and seasonality constraints. Coordinate access arrangements and ensure health & safety and permitting requirements are met. Client & Stakeholder Engagement Liaise effectively with clients, project teams and external stakeholders to provide clear ecological advice, present findings and support integrated multi-disciplinary project delivery. Contribute to team outputs and support senior ecologists in client-facing activities Data Management & Analytical Skills Accurate processing, management and critical analysis of ecological data; produce traceable datasets and support GIS-based mapping and impact assessment outputs. Support quality assurance of ecological assessments and reports. RequiredQualifications & Experience

  • Honours degree in Ecology (or equivalent).
  • A minimum 3 years practical experience.
  • Practical experience in ecological field survey methods, EcIA and AA, and use of GIS in ecological contexts.
  • Full clean driving licence and access to own vehicle (required for fieldwork).

Desired

  • Postgraduate qualification (MSc) in a relevant biological/environmental science with ecological practical experience.
  • Additional certifications or demonstrable equivalent work experience in habitat/species survey techniques, GIS, or relevant legislation would be advantageous.

Working Environment You will work in an agile office environment with hybrid working as standard and a choice of flexible working across multiple office locations; fieldwork is a regular component of the role so successful applicants must hold a full clean driving licence and have access to a vehicle to fulfil field survey duties, and you will be expected to operate as part of a multi‑disciplinary team distributed across the listed locations with occasional travel between offices and to client sites.
