Postdoctoral Researcher/Research Associate - D1 Now Trial Manager, D1 Now Definitive Trial, 1 FTE, School of Medicine, 011939

Applications are invited from suitable qualified candidates for an exciting full-time fixed term post as a Postdoctoral Researcher/Research Associate - D1 Now Trial Manager of the Health Research Board (HRB) funded D1 Now Definitive Cluster Randomised Controlled Trial in the School of Medicine at University of Galway, Ireland.

This position is funded by the HRB and is available from 1st August 2026 to contract end date of May 31st 2028.

The D1 Now Programme of Research

Young adults living with type 1 diabetes are at risk of lower engagement with self-management and poorer clinical and psychosocial outcomes in comparison to younger and older people with diabetes. Since 2014 our multi-disciplinary team (including our Patient and Public Involvement panel of young adults living with diabetes called the Young Adult Panel or YAP) has been working to develop, refine, feasibility test and pilot an intervention called D1 Now, which aims to improve outcomes for this high-risk population. We demonstrated in our pilot trial that a definitive randomised controlled trial (RCT) is feasible. The current D1 Now intervention is delivered alongside usual care and consists of two components: a Support Worker and an Agenda Setting Tool. In 2023, we secured funding to deliver a definitive cluster randomised controlled trial in 12 diabetes centres across the island of Ireland to determine whether the D1 Now intervention, when compared to usual care, is effective and cost-effective in improving patient outcomes among young adults living with type 1 diabetes. Our trial protocol has been published, and the trial is registered on the ISRCTN registry with setup processes currently underway in participating sites.

We are now seeking an exceptional and experienced individual to join the D1 Now Research Team as D1 Now Trial Manager appointed as Research Associate on the IUA salary scale. The successful candidate will join an existing supportive research team comprising an Academic Clinician (Consultant Endocrinologist), an expert in Behavioural Trials (Professor of Health Psychology), a full-time Study co-ordinator (Research Associate), a Specialist Registrar in Endocrinology and an Administrative Assistant. The D1 Now Trial Manager will have access to University of Galway’s clinical trials infrastructure, including access to the Clinical Research Facility Galway (CRFG). The CRFG supports the study with biostatistical and database expertise. Finally, the study team has expertise in Health Economics and Qualitative research.

Salary: Research Associate/Postdoctoral Researcher salary scale €47,273 - €60,250 per annum, (subject to the project’s funding limitations), and pro rata for shorter and/or part-time contracts.
