# Technical Director of Applications (Hands-On Software & Controls)**Location:** Ireland
Are you a visionary Software & Controls Engineer with a passion for hands-on development and technical leadership? We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced **Technical Director of Applications** to drive the design, development, and delivery of cutting-edge software-driven automation solutions across GMP-regulated industries, food, and FMCG sectors.
This is a senior, execution-focused role where you will be instrumental in writing, reviewing, and deploying code as a core part of your daily responsibilities. You will combine technical authority with direct involvement, translating complex customer requirements into robust, scalable, and standardized automation systems.
## Key Responsibilities:
* Lead the technical execution and application development for software-driven automation projects, maintaining a significant hands-on contribution (approx. 80%).
* Manage and mentor a multidisciplinary engineering team (mechanical, electrical, software) utilizing Agile/SCRUM methodologies.
* Drive the modularization and standardization of machine design and software architectures.
* Actively develop, debug, and optimize PLC, HMI, and SCADA software for live projects.
* Define comprehensive system architectures across controls and software layers.
* Ensure successful delivery of automation systems from concept through commissioning (FAT and SAT).
* Provide senior technical expertise and act as an escalation point for complex technical challenges.
* Contribute to the company’s technical roadmap, innovation, and long-term product strategy.
## What We're Looking For:
* Proven hands-on experience in PLC/HMI/SCADA programming and commissioning.
* Deep understanding of automated machinery and system integration.
* Strong expertise in automation, controls, and industrial software engineering.
* Experience in GMP-regulated environments (e.g., pharmaceutical, medical device) is highly preferred.
* Ability to translate User Requirement Specifications (URS) into structured, production-ready software solutions.
* Exceptional debugging, fault-finding, and problem-solving capabilities.
* Strong commercial awareness and ability to balance performance, cost, and manufacturability.
* A natural leader who leads by example, actively mentors team members, and drives accountability.
